Humber Cod Open report

Steve Souter with a cracking cod

Glorious weather conditions greeted this year’s event, featuring an incredible 98 boats in what is arguably the biggest competition gathering of boat anglers in the country.

Despite concerns that recent returns had been below par and cod elusive, catches were good with some excellent fish landed. The event is a ‘heaviest fish’ affair, and the beauty is absolutely anyone can win it.

Fortune this year favoured delighted Boston angler, George Licence who pocketed a total of £1625 in cash and further tackle prizes for his winning cod of 5.4 kilos. Local angler, Adrian Towle grabbed second spot and £875 with a 4.7 kilo cod, while Grimsby’s Arthur Julier earned £500 for third with a fish of 4.42 kilos. Steve ended up in fifth spot with a cod of 4.16 kilos. Prizes ran to an incredible forty places and a fish of around five pounds was required to break into the top 50.

All fish were auctioned for an excellent cause, with £1000 raised and donated to the Butterfly Hospice Trust children’s charity. Superb organization, fishing and prizes mean next year’s event promises to be even bigger. The hospitality and facilities are second to none it is surely a date for every boat angler’s diary.
