Every summer Hull and District AA organise a series of junior Carp Academies, they are brilliantly organised and extremely popular. The Hull and District team of coaches deserve a lot of credit. They arrive early on the Saturday morning and by lunchtime have set up bivvies, catering facilities and tackle ready for the arrival of the juniors. From then till midday the following day they do everything possible to make sure the juniors have a great time and experience the thrill of catching the hard fighting Grebe carp.

By no means do I class myself as a competent lure angler but I do enjoy it. Over the last two years I’ve had some success with various lure styles but shied away from the smaller types of lures, that is up to this year.

Around 3 years ago I set myself a target to catch a 3lb Perch. I’d seen loads of 3’s on social media and the angling press - I honestly thought it would happen pretty quickly. How wrong was I.

It’s 8:30 AM and I am waiting for the car in front of me to start moving, and it’s fair to say both myself and my passenger, Bob Roberts, are full of anticipation. We’re on deck 7 of the Hull Rotterdam ferry and ahead of us two days in search of big perch. Some months ago I’d been told of a top guide in Holland, Rob Kraaijeveld, and after chatting with Bob I’d booked two days. We’d done our research on the area, corresponded with Rob, anxiously watched the long term weather forecast and at last it was time to go, if only the car in front would start moving!
