Over the moon with new UK pb

Martyn Skoyles reveals how he landed his first UK forty and a new personal best with a 41lb mirror known as Moonscale from Somerset’s Ashmead syndicate.
The perfect start to the next day

“Having arrived at the venue around lunchtime, I went for a walk around the lake. I was really torn about which swim to set-up in. I found a group of carp cruising in one area of the lake, but the water was incredibly coloured in another spot, and it looked like something had fed hard in the area recently, although no fish were currently visible. In the end the area of cloudy water just looked too good to ignore, and I carefully got three rods in position in the hope that fish were still in the area” said Martyn.

“Luckily it proved to be the right decision when just after midnight a screaming take saw me doing battle with what felt like a decent fish. After a long fight it was finally ready for netting and it was at that point I realised just how big it was!”

The big mirror picked up a 12mm boilie wrapped in matching flavour paste, and fished over 1kg of free offerings close to an island.

“I’ve been using paste wrapped hookbaits quite a lot in the last few weeks and been catching well on them. The extra attraction that the paste leaks off definitely seems to be making a difference.”
